HW#7

Read this link about Mesopotamia. Answer questions 1 - 3 on page 32 (the last page of the reading).

also, answer the two map questions on page 28 (the should be familiar. I would like you to have the answers on your blog).

Also, watch this video and answer this question:
1. Why did the Sumerians develop written language?

AND watch this video and answer these questions:
1. What do the symbols is Cuneiform represent?
2. What surface did they write on and how did they do it (briefly describe the process)?
3. What were some of the things they drew on?

  1. 1) - Fertile Crescent: The regions curved shape and richness of the land.
    - Silt: When a flood leaves a thick bed of mud.
    - Irrigation: To dig ditches that carry river water to there fields which allowed a surplus of crops.
    - City-State: When each city and surrounding land is controlled.

    - Cultural Diffusion: When a new idea or product is spread from one culture to another.

    2) Challenges: No way of communicating.
    Solutions: Making up writing.

    Challenges: No transportation.
    Solutions: Making the wheel and the sail.

    3) An advantage that is offered from living in a cities is you have no more then one ruler.
    Modern cities do offer the same things because we only have one person who runs the cities and that person is the president.

    1) The reason why the Sumerians developed written language is because they had to keep records from the things that would happen in there whole tribes daily lives.

    1) Cuneiform is symbols that are wedge shaped.
    2) The surface they write on are clay tablets. They write on it with a stylus. A stylus grows along the river they cut them from leaves. They write on the tablet while its soft but first they have to pat it to make a smooth surface to write on. Then after there done or have taken up the whole clay they put it under the sun so it gets hard and turns into a hard tablet and lasts long.
    3) Some things they drew on were walls and clay.

    Silt - a fine soil carried in water of rivers.

    Irrigation - the bringing of water to crop fields by means of canal ditches.

    City-State - a city and its surrounding lands functioning as an independent political unit.

    2. The wrote on clay. They find clay and make them into a tablet by flattening them . Then they use a stylus that they cut from reaves to write. then they place the clay in the sun so it can harden.

    Solution- Sumerians traded with people for more resources

    3. Living in city states provided protection for the people of ancient Mesopotamia. This is because each city state functioned as a separate country. Countries protect their citizens. Modern cities do not provide these advantages. The reason for this is because modern cities do not function as separate countries like city states did.

    The Tigris and Euphrates river valleys are found in Mesopotamia.

    2. What are the physical characteristics of this valley?

    The physical characteristic is Fertile Crescent.

    1.) Fertile crescent - Area of fertile land in Southwest Asia reaching from Israel to the Persian Gulf and incorporating the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Iraq.

    Silt - A fine-grained sediment, especially of mud or clay particles at the bottom of a river or lake.

    Irrigation - To bring a supply of water to a dry area, especially in order to help crops to grow.

    City-State - A independent state consisting of a sovereign city and its surrounding territory.

    Dynasty - A prominent and powerful family or group of people whose members retain their power and influence through several generations.

    Solution - Traded with other people for goods.

    Problem 3.) - Villages out in the open.
    Solution - Built city walls.

    3.) The advantage of living in a sumerians city is that theres everything you need to survive and you only have one ruler. City's today have everything you need to survive and more but there are too many rulers of the modern city today that things can get chaotic.

    1: The symbols is Cuneiform represent webed shaped. And all the symbols were made out of little wege marks.

    2: The surface they written on was in clay tablets and with a stylus. First, Pat some clay into a square pancake. Second, Cut the Stylus at the edge and make it sharp. Press the end of the stylus into the clay and start writing. Third, Put the tablet in the sun to dry. Finally, it turns into hard solid stone and lasts forever (Almost forever).
